Depending on location, this category is referred to alternatively as Junior Sportsman, Rookie or Rookie Sportsman.  While there is only one engine for the ‘Cadet’ classes (Comer K80), there are two different engine classes for this category: Yamaha and KPV (formerly HPV).  The Yamaha Sportsman class is clearly the most popular of the 8-12 year old classes across the country.  Many clubs are now introducing a ‘Yamaha Rookie’ class as an entry level class aimed at 8-10 year olds who are transitioning from Kid Karts or are just entering the sport.  The only difference between Yamaha Junior Sportsman and Yamaha Rookie is that the Rookie class specifies the more restrictive “YBX” (commonly referred to as a ‘3-hole can’) exhaust.

As always, rules vary by track and club so be sure to check with your local club or sanctioning body for rules specific to the event you will be competing in.
